At Pilgrims’, we encourage boys to become confident, independent thinkers who can question, reason and check their own work. We see maths as a way of thinking, aiming to make it engaging, relevant and challenging while equipping boys with the skills to understand and apply it in the real world.
Teaching focuses on building confidence to analyse, make connections and draw conclusions, rather than simply finding the right answer. From the outset, strong numeracy skills are developed, allowing greater focus on deeper thinking as boys progress.
Boys are set to ensure the right level of challenge, working across numbers, measures, shapes, graphs and statistics, with algebra becoming increasingly important as they move through the school.
Boys can take part in the Primary Maths Challenge and the Junior Maths Challenge. Both are national competitions that allow the boys to pit their wits against other pupils across the country and to win awards for their mathematical prowess.
