Boys are encouraged to read, listen and engage with authentic French, developing both enjoyment of the language and the ability to hold conversations with native speakers. A strong balance is maintained between grammar and spoken confidence, with boys encouraged to take risks in both writing and speaking. Learning is supported through songs, games, role-play and enrichment activities such as a French film club.
We use a bespoke curriculum, drawing on the Expo scheme, with pupils working ahead of national levels. By Year 8, most grammar is covered, preparing boys for senior school and future study.
At the top of the school, advanced work develops higher-level skills, including translation, discussion and complex grammar through engaging texts. Native speakers are supported with differentiated work and opportunities to further develop their skills, including informal French-speaking events.
The French curriculum is further enhanced in Year 8 by a weekly intervention from a specialist language teacher. The boys will work individually or in small groups to sharpen and enhance their speaking and grammatical skills. This further reinforces the notion that language is often a communication tool used on a smaller scale. Everyone gets to make progress at their own rate and, like learning any language, often it is the mistakes that we make which help us learn the most effectively.

Yesterday, we said goodbye to our incredible leavers. 💚
We are so incredibly proud of each and every one of them and everything they’ve achieved during their time here at Pilgrims’. It has been a privilege to watch them grow, learn and flourish, and we know they have bright futures ahead.
We’d like to wish all of our leavers and their families the very best as they embark on their next adventure.
But don’t worry… this isn’t the last you’ll see of them! 👀✨

🎨 Art and DT exhibition 🪚
Tonight saw the culmination of the work by our boys in Art and DT. With some truly staggering work on display the boys have showed amazing discipline, creativity and resilience which can certainly be seen in the final product.
A big thank you to our Art teacher, Ros Priddle and our DT teacher Any Herbert who have inspired the boys and curated tonight’s exhibition.
